Genomic and Pathogen Analysis for Variant Sequencing

Genomic and Pathogen analysis is central to the future of medicine and Healthcare. Mutations of Pathogens and the potential rise of more infectious or deadly virus variants has increasingly become one of the biggest concerns in modern medicine, especially since the COVID-19 pandemic.

MTIF have established rapid whole genome virus sequencing services to assist in variant tracking and pathogen surveillance. Utilising Oxford Nanopore Technologies high throughput sequencing technology, namely the GridOn and MinION. The MTIF service has the capacity to sequence up to 1000 samples daily at its Nottingham based facility.

Not only this, but our suite of genomic sequencing devices helps MTIF to fulfil a host of requirements across the OMICS field of research. We can work with clients to deliver on projects encompassing any of the following fields:

  • Proteomics, our expertise and equipment can provide clients with a better understanding of the structure and function of organisms.
  • Transcriptomics, we can help analyse how DNA is expressed as proteins and other molecules.
  • Genomics, we help clients study the complete set of DNA or RNA of an organism.
  • Pharmacogenomics, the science of tailoring prescription drugs to suit a patients unique genomic profile, ensuring improved effectiveness of treatment and removing risk factors.
  • Metabolomics, we have capabilities which enable large-scale study of small molecules, commonly known as metabolites, within cells, biofluids, tissues or organisms.
  • Lipid omics, we have equipment that studies reaction pathways involved in lipid metabolism within biological systems.
  • Epigenomics, our researchers chart the locations and understand the functions of all the chemical tags that mark the genome.

Genomic and Pathogen Analysis

  • Sequence viral genomes from various sample types.
  • Detect and identify variants utilising protocols and analysis methods.
  • High throughput processing of samples using our state-of-the-art technologies.
  • Nanopore technologies, supplied by Oxford Nanopore who lead the way in the field of Genomic research devices.

GridION and MinION

The Medical Technologies Innovation Facility has under its range of state-of-the-art equipment a suite of Oxford Nanopore instruments capable of both high throughput and long whole genomic sequencing runs. These consist of, but are not limited to:

GridION

The on-demand benchtop sequencing, runs up to 5 MinION/Flongle flow cells at any one time. Its system capacity consists of a maximum of 250 GB.

MinION

The portable DNA/RNA sequencing, has a system capacity, translated into bases per 72 hour run per flow cell (at 450 bps), of 60 Gb. The MinION device and flow cells´ main capabilities of 512 channels and data delivered in real time which can be run for as long or as little as required.
