HAAKE CaBER 1 Extensional rheometer

The HAAKE CaBER 1 is a capillary breakup rheometer (CaBER). In the set-up a small quantity of material is placed between parallel plates, which are rapidly stretched to a fixed level of strain. The midpoint diameter is monitored, with a laser beam with a resolution of 10µm, as a function of time as the fluid filament necks and breaks up under the combined forces of surface tension, gravity, and viscoelasticity. The temperature inside the measurement cell can be controlled. The plate motion of the top plate is controlled by a linear drive motor. This system allows fast response and reasonable control over the stretch profiles used.

Additional Information

the fastest stretch time is of the order of 20 ms (depending on stretch distance) and the motor has a positional resolution of 20 µm. The extensional viscosity can be extracted from the data as a function of strain and strain rate. The system is useful for low viscosity fluids (in the range 10-3 to 106 Pa.s) such as, inks, paints, coatings, polymer melts, polymer solutions, suspensions, emulsions, ago-sprays, adhesives, biological fluids, foods, PET, Nylon and Polyolefins
